Identification
The species grows to 28 cm. Black head, white area behind cheeks and broad yellow bar merging with bright yellow back. Pectoral, pelvic and caudal fins yellow. Dorsal and anal fins blue. Rest of flanks dark blue with blue vermiculation.

Range and habitat
The species only occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from northwestern Australian coasts to east Indonesia, south of Papua New Guinea and Queensland. Lives in shallow coastal coral reefs, mostly above flat ground, from 5 to 20 m.

Status : The species has a small range but is very seldom collected and its habitat remains fairly safe at this point.
