Identification
Adults can reach up to 18 cm in length. Male grey-blue with vertical black stripes on flanks, yellow dorsal fin and black spot on breast. Female is pattern-less grey becoming blue on head and breast, with yellow upper back and dorsal fin.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the eastern Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean, from Indonesia and Rowley Shoals to south Japan and Tonga, east to Fiji. Lives in outer reef slopes and drop-offs, near caves, from 20 to 45 meters deep.
