Identification
Adults can reach up to 21 cm in length. Male grey-blue with vertical black stripes on upper flanks, orange mask going to mid flanks and spotted fins. Female grey-blue with black vertical stripes over gill coverts and blue eye-ring.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in a small area of the western Pacific Ocean, from southern Japan to Taiwan and northern Philippines. Lives in seaward slopes and drop-offs of coral and rocky reeds, from 15 to 200 m.

Status : The species remains common in the wild and apparently faces no known threats.
