Identification
Adults can reach up to 40 cm in length. Laterally compressed body with opercular spine and small mouth. Coloration is mostly dark blue with large crescent-shaped yellow area from dorsal fin to lower flanks. Bright yellow tail.

Range and habitat
This species occurs in the western Indian Ocean, from the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden to Zanzibar. Lives in inshore reefs with coral growth, down to 30 meters deep.

CITES : Not Listed
Status : The species is common in suitable habitat and seems to be stable so far despite occasional collection for the aquarium trade.
