Identification
Red and yellow eyes. Body dark red-brown with vertical pale grey bars. Reticulated reddish-brown head with grey-white blotches. Juveniles tan and white with lateral band on flanks.

Range and habitat
Indo-Pacific, from South Africa to Kiribati, south Japan and south Great Barrier Reef. Found around algal ridges and ridge crests of exposed coral reefs, in shallow coastal waters.

Status : The species is widespread and common, even occurring within protected areas. May be vulnerable to habitat destruction in the future but this needs to be re-evaluated.
