Identification
The species can grow to 16 cm in length. Triangle-shaped body with short snout. Face covered with vertical red-brown and yellow bands. Grey flanks with yellow chevron-shaped markings. Tail with no markings besides colored edge.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from Cocos Keeling islands and Indonesia to Tonga, north to south Japan, south to New South Wales, Australia. Lives in lagoons and seaward reefs, from 5 to 20 meters deep.

Status : The species has a fairly large range and its dependence to Acropora corals could be a threat with coral reef destruction on the long term.
