Identification
The species grows to 20 cm in length. Short snout. Bright yellow with black spot circled with blue on upper flanks. Two crossing curving blue lines on lower flanks. Chevron-shaped dark band, edged with blue, on face.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from Red Sea and East Africa to Pitcairn islands, north to Japan, south to Lord Howe Island. Lives in lagoons and seaward reefs with rich coral growth, to 30 meters deep.

Conservation
IUCN RED LIST : DATA DEFICIENT
CITES : The species occurs at very low densities and is totally dependant on corals. The trend of its wild populations needs to be studied.
