Identification
The species grows to 15 cm. Flank scales with clear center. Coloration orange on flanks, turning yellow on dorsal, anal and tail fins with clearer area above forehead. White ring on tail peduncle. Cream face with black band. Short snout.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from east Africa to Hawaii and Galapagos islands, north to south Japan, south to Lord Howe Island. Lives in coral and rocky reefs in lagoons, channels and outer reef slopes, to 61 m.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN
CITES : Not Listed
Status : The species has a huge range and, despite coral reef destruction and collection for the trade, no apparent declines have been noted.
