Identification
Adults can reach a maximum length of 20 cm. Big round head, laterally compressed body. Ground coloration is dull yellow to cream or beige with small red stripes on face and dots of flanks. Broad black vertical bands on flanks.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in South America, in Colombia and Venezuela around the Rio Negro river basin and the upper Orinoco drainage. Lives in freshwater areas with aquatic vegetation and flat stones.

CITES : Not Listed
Status : The species hasn’t been assessed but seems to be at least locally common. It may become vulnerable to over-collection for the animal trade.
