Identification
Adults can reach a length of 63 cm for a weight of 1.6 kg. Some males develop a hump on forehead. Coloration is beige to silvery with black spotting all over body and row of large black blotches on middle of flanks. Large mouth.

Range and habitat
The species occurs on the Atlantic slope of Central America, from Ulua river in Honduras to Matina river in Costa Rica. Found in lakes, usually in turbid waters and over muddy bottoms.

Status : This species is locally very common to abundant and collection for the aquarium trade isn’t causing any declines currently.
