Identification
The species grows up to 21 cm in length, males being bigger than females and with a slightly bulbous forehead. High profile, long forehead. Coloration olive-grey to yellow with a row of black spots on mid flanks. Back half of body mottled.

Range and habitat
The species is endemic to the Island of Madagascar, it occurs mostly in the drainages of the eastern side of the island. Lives in lowland coastal rivers in both brackish and fresh water.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN
CITES : Not Listed
Status : Species still locally common but it could become endangered by loss and degradation of habitat, overfishing and introduction of alien species.
