Identification
Adults can reach up to 23 cm in length. Long, slightly convex forehead, elongated mouth. Coloration variable, usually greenish with a red tinge and small light white-blue dots on each scales. Faint parallel lines from snout to eyes.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in South America, in the Amazon river basin, from south Colombia to north Bolivia, east to Brazil and Guianas. Lives in slow moving rivers, coastal marshes and estuaries with muddy bottom.

Status : The species’ status has yet to be assessed but it has a large range and appears to be fairly common despite local collection for trade.
