Identification
Adults can grow to 17 cm in length. Laterally compressed body with steep and bulbous forehead. Coloration is silvery grey-blue with six relatively thin vertical black bars from head to tail. Dark fins with slight blue margins.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from eastern Indian Ocean to Japan and northern Australia. The species is absent from the Red Sea. Lives in inshore reefs and lagoons, down to 6 meters.

Status : The species has a large range and, although occasionally collected for fish trade, remains still at least locally common.
