Notes : No subspecies known.
The species can grow to 12 cm in length. Juveniles are dark red-orange whereas adults have flanks mostly black, reddish dorsal and caudal fins, black pelvic fins, reddish snout and very broad transversal white band behind head.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Pacific Ocean, from eastern Indonesia and Southern Philippines to Queensland, Micronesia and New Caledonia. Lives in lagoons and outer reefs, down to about 18 meters.

Status : The species has a large range but is possibly locally declining because of overcollection for the trade and localized anemone bleeching events.
