Identification
The species can reach 7 cm in length. Juveniles mostly orange-yellow with brighter back and violet head. Adults with violet head and first half of flanks, back half of flanks orange-yellow, orange dorsal, anal and caudal fins. Blue dots on face.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in Indo-Pacific area, from Scott and Ashmore reefs to Ryukyu islands, south to New Caledonia, east to Solomon islands and Palau. Lives in coastal to outer coral reef crests, upper seaward slopes, to 20 meters deep.

Status : The species has a large range and is occasionally collected for the trade but in small numbers.
