Identification
The species reaches 35 cm for a weight of 453 g. Coloration reddish to grey. Radiating blue lines around eyes, black blotch behind eye, dark band from snout to behind eye. Two vertical bands on back of flanks with clear space between.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from Christmas Island to Hawaii and Marquesas Islands, north to south Japan, south to Lord Howe island. Lives around reef flats and shallow lagoons, over coral, sand and rubble, to 161 m.

Status : The species has a wide range. It is harvested in small numbers as a food source and sometimes caught for the trade. Monitoring would be needed.
