Identification
The species grows to 35 cm in length. Strong sexual dimorphism, female being orange with wide dark brown bars on flanks. Males are bright orange with pink vermiculations and sometimes a black spot on dorsal fin.

Range and habitat
The species is found in the Indo-Pacific area, from China to Japan and off north Australia to New Caledonia. Also around Hawaii. Lives in coastal areas near inshore reefs, from 60 to more than 300 meters deep.

Status : The species has a very large range and seems to remain secure as it lives in great depths.
