Identification
Adults will grow up to 40 cm and a weight of 2 kg. Juveniles yellowish with clear markings, adults are pinkish-white with broad vertical red bands with indistinct mottling. Diagonal red bands on head. Dorsal fin conspicuously tipped black.

Range and habitat
This species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from Red Sea to South Africa to Pitcairn islands, north to Japan and Korea, south to Lord Howe Island. Lives in outer reef slopes, protected bays and lagoons, from 4 to 160 meters deep.

Status : The species is common, even locally abundant. Local declines have been noted due to overexploitation by fisheries. Monitoring is needed.
