Identification
Unmistakable species, growing to 30 cm in length. Elongated snout, large mouth. Coloration pink with many broad horizontal bright yellow bands on flanks and head. Lower cheeks covered with yellow dots. Red spot on anal fin.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the western Atlantic Ocean, from Bahamas and Florida to Gulf of Mexico, Lesser Antilles and south to Brazilian coasts. Lives in Sandy bottom areas and reefs, from 35 to 365 meters deep.

Status : The species inhabits deeper waters and remains safe so far. It is believed to be numerous and widespread.
