Identification
Adults can reach up to 30 cm in length. Fairly large mouth, body slightly compressed laterally. Ground coloration is brown to almost black with horizontal sometimes broken yellow to white bands on flanks and head.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from Red Sea and East Africa to Marquesas Islands, north to South Japan, south to New Zealand. Lives in coastal waters near caves, over coral and rocky substrates, to 130 meters.
