Identification
Adults can grow to 15 cm in length. Back hump not as pronounced as other species. Coloration ranging from dark bluish grey to dark brown to nearly completely black. Fins and gill coverts with thin dark blue edge.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the western Atlantic Ocean, from central Mexico to south Florida, Caribbean islands and Panama (Absent from Venezuela). Lives in shallow reefs, over hard and soft corals, from 3 to 67 meters deep.

Status : The species has a wide range and can be quite common in places. It currently faces no threats.
