Identification
Adults can reach up to 69 cm in length for a weight of 5.4 kg. Body and head shape is grouper-like with large mouth and big lips. Coloration is olive-brown with indistinct markings on flanks. Dark broad bands on cheeks, white chin.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in North America, from St Lawrence river and great Lakes to east USA, south to Mississippi river. Lives in large clear lakes and deep waters of rivers with lots of cover.

Status : The species is very common and its populations are either stable to slightly declining throughout its range.
