Identification
Adults can reach up to 63.5 cm in length for a weight of 4.7 kg. Body and head shape is grouper-like with large mouth and big lips. Coloration is cream-grey with upper flanks dark spotted. Longitudinal black line from head to tail.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in North America, from Mississippi river basin to Guadalupe river in Texas. Lives in deeper waters of rivers and lakes, small fast flowing creeks.

Status : The species is very common and its populations are either stable to slightly declining throughout its range.
