Identification
Adults can reach a maximum length of 53 cm for a weight of 4.4 kg. High profile, laterally compressed body, head profile slightly concave with long snout and large mouth. Each flank scale yellow with blue spots. Blue lines on head.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in Western Atlantic Ocean from North US coasts to Antilles and Gulf of Mexico, south to Brazil. Occurs above sandy bottoms and coral reefs, down to 40 meters.

Status : The species seems to be at least locally common in its big range. Local declines due to habitat degradation may occur.
