Identification
Adults can reach a maximum length of 9 cm. Unmistakable species. Deep and laterally-compressed body. Big yellow eyes and thick lips. Entirely bright to orange or flame-red. Black area on top of back and base of dorsal fin.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the western and central Pacific Ocean, from Ryukyu Islands and Great Barrier Reef to Line Islands. Lives in current-swept reef-fronts and coral reef terraces, down to 10 m.

Status : The species seems to be reasonably common but possibly declining because of habitat loss.
