Identification
Adults can grow to 40 cm in length. Large upturned mouth, big yellow eyes. Flattened rounded back, elongated body. Silvery-grey body with fading dark dots on scales. Clear tail fin. Black round and elongated blotches on upper flanks.

Range and habitat
This species occurs in southern Asia and Australasia, from Sri Lanka and south India to Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia, New Guinea and north Australia. Lives in coastal and brackish waters, estuaries, lower reaches of rivers, to 10 m.

Status : The species has a huge range and is likely to be a species complex. Reassessment is necessary once taxonomic status is sorted out.
