Notes : No subspecies known.

Identification
Adults can grow to 1 m. Juveniles orange-brown, two broad black bands and orange-yellow lines. Adults dark grey with clear spots and vermiculation. Dorsal fin orange with black spot, lower part of caudal fin black. Orange eyes.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from Red Sea and East Africa to Micronesia, north to south Japan, south to New Caledonia and Australia. Lives in clear lagoons and seaward reefs, down to 50 meters.

Status : The species status has yet to be assessed but it has a fairly large range and isn’t fully dependent on corals as adults. Rarely collected for trade.
