Notes : No subspecies known.

Identification
Adults can reach a body length of about 72 cm. Laterally compressed body, big head with thick yellow lips and large mouth. Coloration is silvery white with 6 longitudinal dark brown to black bands, white belly. Yellow fins with black spots.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from East Africa to Papua New Guinea and New Caledonia, north to south Japan. Lives in inshore coral and rocky reefs, protected lagoons, to 25 meters deep.

CITES : Not Listed
Status : The species has a huge range and is locally common. It is targeted by fisheries and this possible long-term threat needs to be monitored.
