Identification
The species grows to 30 cm. Pointed snout. Coloration grey-white with wavy golden yellow lines on flanks under lateral line. Small rows of clear spots on golden back ground and bright yellow-white blotch over lateral line. Fins reddish.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific region, from East Africa to Tuamoto Islands (but not Hawaii), north to south Japan, south to Norfolk island. Lives in subtidal reef flats, lagoons and seaward reefs, to 30 meters deep.

Status : The species has a wide range and is heavily fished. Fisheries management programs are being implemented to prevent declines.
