Identification
Adults can reach a length of 52 cm. Body dark shiny grey with small blue dots on each flank scales. White chin and belly with blue tinge. Caudal fin mottled orange with red margin. Red-orange blotch on gill covert and pectoral fin base.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from Red Sea and East Africa to Tonga and Marshall islands, north to Ryukyu islands, south to Lord Howe Island. Lives in coastal sandy areas, coral reefs and deep lagoons, to 50 meters deep.

Status : The species has a huge range and seems relatively common. However it is declining in areas where fishing pressure is too high.
