Identification
The species reaches 81 cm long. Juveniles with dark red eye-band, red wavy lines on flanks and black tail peduncle spot. Forehead slightly rounded and gently sloping, smaller mouth and eyes. Adults red with bright red fins.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from the Persian Gulf to Fiji, north to south Japan, south to north Australia and New Caledonia. Lives in trawling grounds, rocky, rubble and coral reefs, from 5 to 100 meters deep.
