Identification
The species can reach 60 cm long for a weight of 3,5 kg. Humped back, elongated snout. Coloration globally silvery grey, sometimes with a light reddish to pinkish tinge. Body covered with yellow-orange dots forming wavy lines. Red tail fin.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the western Atlantic Ocean, from Bermuda and North Carolina through the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico to southern Brazil. Lives in coral reefs, turbid water, vegetated sandy areas, from 10 to 400 m.

Status : The species has declined in many parts of its range because of overexploitation, especially when gathering in big aggregations.
