Identification
Adults will grow to a maximum length of 50 cm. Head with straight profile and big eyes. Adults silvery red with redder head. White and red blotches on top of tail peduncle. Juveniles with dark dorsal and anal fin edges, red band near eye.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from Maldives to Samoa, north to south Japan, south to north Australia. Lives in muddy coastal slopes, coral and rubble reefs, from 10 to 150 meters deep.

Status : The species has a large range and is only targeted by artisanal fisheries. It occurs in protected areas where its populations remain stable.
