Identification
Adults can reach a maximum length of 86 cm for a weight of 4.1 kg. Laterally compressed body. Coloration is silvery white to bluish-white with spots on upper parts of flanks. Broad longitudinal yellow band on flanks, yellow tail.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Western Atlantic ocean from the coasts of Massachusetts and Bermudas to Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico and south Brazil. Lives in coastal waters, mostly near coral reefs, well above bottom, to 180 meters.
