Notes : No subspecies known.

Identification
Maximum length is 45 cm. The species is usually uniform dark brown but can appear grey as well. Whitish ring around lips. Orange markings on fins. Dorsal and anal fins have blue edges. Crescent-shaped caudal fin with black and blue edges.

Range and habitat
This species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, mostly around islands and archipelagos, from East Africa to Philippines and to Line Islands. Lives in clear seaward reefs, near drop-offs, at depths down to 40 meters.

Status : The species is at least locally common within its range. It’s rarely captured for aquarium trade and occurs in many protected areas.
