Identification
The species grows to 22 cm. Protruding fleshy lips. Coloration from deep purple-brown to orange-brown with thin longitudinal lines on flanks and clear dots on face. Blue eyes. Two conspicuous black dots on sides of tail peduncle.

Range and habitat
The species lives in the Indo-Pacific area, from East Africa to Tuamoto Islands, north to south Japan, south to New South Wales, Australia. Lives in coral and rubble areas of lagoons and seaward reefs, from 2 to 53 m.

Status : The species is common to abundant in its large range. It suffers from no threats. Collected locally for the trade and for food.
