Identification
The species grows to 86 cm for weight of 12 kg. Laterally compressed body, disk-shaped and deep, elongated mouth. Long dorsal and anal fins. Coloration ashy-white to blue-grey with light grey spots and black blotches on flanks and face.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Pacific Ocean, from Japan to South China Sea. Also reported from Norfolk Island and from Hawaii. Lives in rocky and coral reefs, to 135 meters deep.

Status : The species’ status has yet to be assessed. It occurs in areas where pressure from fisheries is high. So far it seems to remain numerous and safe.
