Identification
The species grows to 55 cm in length for a weight up to 1.8 kg. Adults have white ground color with red edges on each flank scales. Back and cap redder. White cheeks with dark red spot. Black blotch on rear of back, near tail.

Range and habitat
The species is found in the Indo-Pacific region, from east Africa to south Japan, north Australia and New Caledonia. Lives around deep coral reefs with lots of invertebrates, down to 160 m.

Status : This species has a fairly large range and in common in deeper areas. It is occasionally caught for trade but numbers are not known.
