Identification
Adults can grow to 15 cm in length. Creamy-white on belly, head dull olive-blue, turning dark blue on first half of body. Rest of body reddish-yellow to orange with broad black edges on middle flank scales. Blue base of fins.

Range and habitat
This species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from Rowley Shoals and Andaman Sea to Philippines, Palau and Indonesia, to Ryukyu Islands and Australia. Lives in lagoons, channels and outer reef slopes, in coral and rubble, to 30 m deep.

Status : The species has a large range. It is vulnerable to overtrapping for the trade and to large-scale habitat destruction. These threats need to be monitored.
