Identification
Adults can reach up to 30 cm in length for a weight of 320 g. Elongated and cylindrical body. Juveniles are pink. Adults become dark violet-purple with blue and black top of head. Back of belly with yellow tinge.

Range and habitat
This species in found in the western Atlantic Ocean, from South Florida and Bermuda to northern South-American coasts. Lives in seaward reef slopes and reef patches, from 8 to 100 meters deep.

Status : The species has a large range and occurs in large groups. It is common to abundant, currently facing no known threats, in most of its range.
