Notes : No subspecies known.

Identification
The species can grow to 40 cm in length. Juveniles bright orange-red with white saddles. Females green-orange with yellow tail, blue dots on flanks and orange head. Males completely dark orange green with red tinge on flanks and tail.

Range and habitat
The species only occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from Christmas and Cocos Keeling islands to Hawaii and Tuamoto Islands, to Japan and Australia. Lives in mixed coral, sand and rubble areas in reefs and lagoons, to 50 m.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN
CITES : Not Listed
Status : The species has a large range. It is targeted by fisheries, both for food and trade but this isn’t viewed as a threat for now.
