Notes : No subspecies known.

Identification
Adults can reach 19 cm in length. Unmistakable. Cylindrical body. Juveniles are light orange with dark cap. Adults have bright yellow head and first half of body, rear half of body is blue with dark edges and bright red areas on fins.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the western Atlantic ocean from Bermuda and southern Florida to Gulf of Mexico and south to Brazil. Lives in coral and rocky reefs, exposed rocky ledges, down to 80 meters.

Status : The species is known to be common to locally abundant within its large range. It is sometimes captured for international trade.
