Notes : No subspecies known.

Identification
Body with large checkered pattern with dark grey-black areas and greenish-white clear spots. Clear center of scales in dark areas. Orange fins with light dots, light pink markings on cheeks.

Range and habitat
Indo-Pacific, from east Africa and Persian Gulf to Indonesia, Philippines, Taiwan and north Australia. Found around rocky shorelines, in shallow weedy areas with little coral growth.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN
CITES : Not Listed
Status : The species has a huge range where it is quite common, even locally abundant. It is caught both by fisheries and for the trade. The impact of these activities need to be monitored.
