Identification
The species grows to 17 cm long. Fairly slender body, large eye and pointed snout. Coloration bright red to pink-red, broad white band over lips, numerous thin white bands on flanks. Caudal fin with red edges, white tinge on tail peduncle.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from the Red Sea and East Africa to Hawaii and Pitcairn islands, north to Japan, south to north Australia. Lives in shallow coral reefs, lagoons and seaward reefs, to 60 meters deep.

Status : The species has a huge range and is relatively common to locally very common. It is facing no threats at this time.
