Identification
The species grows to 61 cm for a weight up to 2,1 kg. Elongated body with high back profile, thick lips. Females orange to yellow with dark brown to orange dots on clear flanks. Males brown with blue fins, white blotches on first half of body.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Eastern Pacific, from Amchitka Island in the Aleutian chain to southern California in USA. Lives in inshore rocky areas, often on kelp beds and sandy bottoms, to 242 m.

Status : The species is still considered common within its range despite being targeted by local fisheries for sport fishing and for food.
