Identification
Adults can reach a maximum length of 20 cm. Body is elongated with steep angled forehead and big eyes. Very long feather-like dorsal fin. Coloration from cream to beige or grey with dark mottling on flanks and dark vertical band on face.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in Northern Pacific Ocean, from St Lawrence Island and Alaska to South California. May also occur around Japan. Found mostly on rocky bottoms with algae, down to 110 meters.
