Identification
Adults can reach a maximum length of 40 cm. Big head with very short snout and steep forehead. Adults are bright red with brownish transversal bands on flanks. Lower flanks and belly pinkish to white. Blue margin on pectoral fins.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in Eastern Atlantic Ocean from Baltic Sea to Angola. Another population occurs down to South Africa then to Mozambique.

Status : The species seems to be fairly common, especially in the Atlantic part of its range. Occurs in protected areas, facing no current threats.
