Identification
Adults can reach about 60 cm in length. Unmistakable. Global coloration blackish brown with pearly aspect to flank scales. Lower flanks with large white blotches. Yellow mouth with white ring on snout. Tail fin with large white band.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area from Red Sea to South Africa, east to Samoa, north to South Japan, south to New Caledonia. Lives in clear coastal and seaward coral reefs, to at least 70 m.

Status : The species has a large range but is globally uncommon and often caught for the aquarium trade.
