Identification
Body length of 198 cm, shoulder height of 121 cm and weight up to 126 kg. Males are dark grey to black with rufous lower legs and vertical white stripes on coat. Female rufous-orange with vertical white stripes. Dark nose patch.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in southeastern Africa, from Malawi to Zimbabwe and Mozambique, to northeast South Africa. Introduced in Botswana and Namibia. Lives in dense thickets areas, in open woodlands and forests.

Status : The species is mostly found in protected areas where its populations are now stable or increasing after being depleted in the past.
