Notes : 1 other subspecies known. Sometimes placed in genus Hyelaphus.

Identification
Body length of 150 cm, shoulder height of 75 cm, tail of 21 cm for a weight of 95 kg. Short-legged deer with barrel-shaped body. Medium-sized antlers, chocolate-brown fur with black legs, golden brown neck. Fawn born unspotted.

Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs in South East Asia, from south China to north Thailand and Cambodia. Probably extinct in Laos and Vietnam. Species is also found from India to Myanmar. Lives in lowland tall humid grasslands, often near rivers.

IUCN RED LIST : ENDANGERED
CITES : Appendix I
Status : The species is under constant pressure from habitat destruction. This subspecies is now extinct in most of its former range. It has yet to be assessed on its own.
